Consumers to pay for ACC Minister’s exaggerations

From tomorrow car and motorbike owners will be hit with substantial increases in the cost of registering their vehicles, because of the Minister’s decision to exaggerate financial issues within ACC, Labour ACC spokesperson David Parker says.

“Minister of ACC Nick Smith has for well over a year been exaggerating financial issues within the organisation in a bid to justify the National Party’s privatisation agenda and now consumers are paying the price, literally,” David Parker said.

“From tomorrow car owners will face increases of $30 while motorbike owners will have fee hikes ranging from $70 through to $170 a year.

“It is ridiculous that less than a week after ACC Minister Nick Smith announced the organisation will this year record a $2 billion surplus, New Zealanders are being hit with substantial increases in ACC levies.

“At a time when Kiwis are already struggling, substantially increasing vehicle registration costs is a cruel blow when the justification used for the increases was exaggerated,” David Parker said.
