Chris Pither
Chris Pither continued his winning start to the 2009/2010 NZV8 Ute Series when the second round of the series commenced at Pukekohe Park Raceway today (Saturday 5 December). Pither, who took a clean sweep at the opening round at Taupo in October, was the fastest driver in qualifying today and then went on to win the first race of the round over 8 laps this afternoon.
‘The Doctor’ needed only two flying laps to set the quickest time in qualifying to gain maximum points from the session. The Cairns Motorsport Team had fitted a new set of brake pads prior to qualifying but they began to give problems during the session. “The brakes were playing up. There was a harsh grinding sound from the rear pads,” said Pither. The team set to work to change the rotors while Pither participated in the marble draw to establish grid positions for the opening race. The draw gave the Palmerston North driver fourth place on the grid for the contest.
When the race got underway Pither made short work of the task of slicing through to the front, taking the lead as the field completed their second lap.
The ENZED Falcon soon had a comfortable lead, which was just as well, as the brake issue returned. However Pither was able to back off and did not push hard, steering the ENZED Falcon home for it’s fourth win from four starts in the series.
Pither was happy with the day’s work. “We had a pretty good run. The Holden’s are a lot quicker here than they were in Taupo. I will have my work cut out to get through the field tomorrow,” he said as he faces the prospect of starting from eighth place in the first of tomorrow’s races.
The team will return to an old set of rear brake pads tomorrow to try and eliminate the problems encountered today. However there was no sign of the misfire that plagued Pither at the opening round.
Today’s races were held in dry conditions although some rain at times left a stream of water running across the road at Ford Mountain, making it challenging for the drivers.
Pither’s efforts in the 2009/2010 NZV8 Ute Series are supported by ENZED, KDTraining.com and Cairns Bins.
